La cerveza es una bebida fermentada que se produce a partir de cuatro ingredientes elementales para hacer cerveza: malta de cebada, lúpulo, levadura y agua. Se denomina malteado a la técnica que provoca la germinación de la cebada y luego interrumpción en seco, secándola con diferentes técnicas para conseguir diferentes colores y tostados. De este modo aparecen las enzimas que convierten el almidón del grano en azucares convertibles que las levaduras transformarán después en alcohol. Junto a la malta de cebada, la cerveza admite otros cereales como trigo, centeno y avena, o aditivos como arroz, fruta, frutos secos, especias, etc. De la planta del lúpulo se utilizan los conos, ya sean en formato flor, pellets o extracto de aceite. El lúpulo no solo es responsable del amargor de la cerveza, también es un conservante natural y también aporta sabor y aromas frutales y herbales en función de la variedad.
